More than three decades after its release, Elton John’s 1989 ballad “Sacrifice” has reached a major digital milestone. The song’s official music video has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, becoming the first video from the legendary singer’s catalog to enter the platform’s Billion Views Club.

The milestone adds another achievement to John’s long career, with the classic ballad continuing to attract viewers years after its original success.

Released on his 1989 album Sleeping with the Past, “Sacrifice” was written by John and his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. The song explores the complexities of romantic relationships, including commitment, temptation, and separation.

Directed by Alek Keshishian, the music video features singer Chris Isaak and model Yasmeen Ghauri portraying a couple whose relationship begins to fall apart.

The track also holds a special place in John’s chart history. In 1990, “Sacrifice” became his first solo No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom. It also reached No. 18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Its latest YouTube achievement reflects the lasting popularity of one of John’s best-known ballads.
